Jim Grant's Tech Tips
'99 Cadillac Seville STS, A/C Chirping
Q:
I have
been trying to get this problem fixed on my '99 Caddy Seville and I'm
getting the run around from the dealer. The problem is a chirping noise
coming from the engine. The dealer found out that it is the air conditioner
compressor and told me that this is normal behavior of the car. It is
a loud noise when driving 70 mph. I would like to know how to get this
resolved?

A:
There
was a Caddy that came into our shop with a tough noise problem. After
it was all said and done it turned out that the wrong serpentine belt
had been installed. The part number in the parts catalog provided a belt
number for a belt that worked but was just a little longer than it should
have been. The automatic belt tensioner just could not hold the correct
tension on the belt and at highway speeds would cause a noise. The right
belt, no noise. If the dealer you're working with doesn't seem to work
for you then maybe you should find a different repair facility. Life works
that way.
