‘97 Cadillac Catera, Transmission Dip Stick Location

Q: I own a ‘97 Cadillac Catera 3.0 L SMI DOHC 24V rear wheel drive. I can'tlocate the transmission dipstick on this car. Can you give me a clue or a diagramforits location?

- Pat

A: You might as well stop looking for a transmission fluid dipstick. Your Cadillac, like many newer vehicles, does not have one. Instead, there is a fluid levelinspection port, that in your case, is in the oil pan of the transmission. Tocorrectly check the fluid level requires the engine to be running with the transmissionat operating temperature, about a 15 mile drive. In addition, the vehicle hasto be level. You can jack the vehicle up evenly on both ends, but a lift is thepreferred way. The fluid should be even with the bottom of the threaded openingin the transmission pan when the plug is removed. So, instead of a simple 30second check with maybe a minute or two to add fluid and recheck, checking andadjusting the fluid level in your Cadillac has now become 15 to 30 minute job.Isn’t it just amazing how technology is making life easier?
