'98 Ford Taurus, Timing Chain Replacement
Q:
I was wondering about
the advisability of replacing the timing chain on my 98 Ford Taurus.
When I got the car it had 70K miles. My dealer told me they did not recommend
replacement. But this flies in the face of my own experiences and what
seems like common sense. Now, with 122K, I still want to do what I can
to prolong the life of the vehicle until I can pay cash for a new one.

A:
You did not state which
engine you had in your Ford Taurus, but as far as the 3.0 & 3.8 liter
engines the timing chain should not be an issue at 122k. I have many customers
with much more mileage and have not had a failure. If you were to come
into the shop at 200k with a concern then I say, "yes change the
timing chain and gears". The timing chain and gears are known to
be very reliable in your Ford, providing many miles of problem free service.
