Mazda GLC, Won’t Stay Running
Q: My ‘82 Mazda GLC starts normal, and runs for about 10-15 minutes,
then the engine stops, and can't be restarted for 2-3 hours (starter will
not function, even if jumpers are used), then the process can be repeated.
The alternator and battery are less than 1 month old. I just replaced
the starter. R.A. Smith
A: It
sounds as if you’re losing the electrical power supply to the ignition
switch, or the ignition switch is failing. Because the problem is so consistent
it should be reasonably easy to prove. Run the engine until it shuts down
on its own. With a test light and an assistant holding the key in the
crank position, check for electrical power at the signal (crank) wire
from the ignition on the starter solenoid. If there is no signal then
test the signal wire at the ignition switch. A little back tracking should
provide the answer.
