Dodge Intrepid, Coolant Leak
Q: Hi Jim, I have a ‘93 Dodge Intrepid with
a 3.5L 24 valve engine, and I’m getting a strong coolant smell after short
drives [from engine area] losing about a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch coolant
per week. I only drive about 100km per week. It appears to be from the
top of the engine maybe aft of the thermostat housing. I had the fuel
rail seals replaced late last year on a recall. There are no visible leaks
on top or underneath just the occasional small puff of steam with the
hood up. Any ideas?
A: Have
the timing covers pulled off and check for signs of coolant leaks. The
area that we see the most problem with is the adapter right behind the
water pump to the engine block. The coolant is known for going bad in
a big way in this engine. The result is an acidic coolant that eats its
way out of the cooling system. Even rubber o-rings take a beating from
this problem. Once you find the cause for the leak and repair it be sure
to have the cooling system flushed. The cooling systems in today’s vehicles
are prone to cooling system problems if not properly maintained. Saving
a penny or two today will cost you dollars tomorrow if preventative maintenance
is not performed.
