Ford Taurus, Noises from Down Under
Q: When I stop at a stoplight
or the engine is running in park on my '91 Ford Taurus, I notice a loud
vibrating sound coming from the underside of the car. It sounds as if
a pan or plate is loose. What could be wrong?.........Katherine
A: Your
Ford Taurus, like many automobiles, has heat shielding on the exhaust
system. On older vehicles it's not uncommon for the heat shields to crack
or break. The broken heat shield will cause an irritating buzz or vibration
from under the vehicle, much in the same manner you have described. Most
of the time, the heat shield merely needs to be re-welded or re-clamped
to the exhaust to rid the vehicle of noises from down under.
