'98 Ford Contour, ABS/ Brake Warning Lights Reset
Q:
My ABS and Brake "warning lights" came on in my '98 Ford Contour.
I checked the fluid levels, pads and shoes look like new, no apparent
leaks. I unhooked the negative terminal side of battery, for a couple
of minutes, the rear sensors seem intact and undisturbed. How can this
be reset?
A:
In
most cases disconnecting the battery will cause most vehicle computer
system memories to clear and reset, not all, but most. If the warning
light returns after this step then there is a system problem. The anti-lock
brake system computer requires several important pieces of information
to operate correctly. Each time the ignition is turned on the ABS computer
runs a series of system tests. If the ABS warning light is coming on and
staying on each time the ignition is turned on, then there is a system
problem and the computer is informing you of this. If there is a system
problem, no matter how many times you disconnect the battery the ABS computer
is going to keep turning that warning light on. A diagnostic check is
in order for an answer to your ABS problem.
