Ford Explorer, Temp Problem
Q:
I recently
replaced the water pump and thermostat on my 96 Ford Explorer, 4.0
engine, as part of a tune up. Ever since then, I've noticed my temperature
gauge fluctuating from cold to nearly hot all the time. It won't hold
steady in the normal range. I checked actual coolant temp with a diagnostic
scanner and it matches the gauge readout. Any ideas what went wrong?

A:
Thats
one of the great things about cars, you can perform a repair or service
by the book and there still may be a problem. It may be that youve
installed a defective part. I would be leaning toward a possible thermostat
problem. The high and low cycling of the coolant temperature is a good
indicator of a control problem. If the thermostat is the problem you will
not be the first and certainly not the last to install a defective new
part.
