Remove and discard the converter turbine shaft seal.
Install Turbine Shaft Holder.
Remove the fluid level indicator and oil filler tube.
Remove the fluid filler tube bolts.
Remove the fluid level indicator and oil filler tube.
Remove the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor.
Remove the TSS sensor bolt.
Remove the TSS sensor.
Remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) .
Remove the bolt.
Remove the VSS.
Remove the transmission range (TR) sensor.
Remove the TR sensor bolts.
Remove the TR sensor.
Disconnect the solenoid electrical connector.
Remove the fluid cooler tube.
Remove the fluid cooler tube bolt and washer.
Remove the fluid cooler tube nut.
Remove the drain back valve spring.
Remove the steel ball.
CAUTION: Remove the transmission fluid pan before turning the transmission over. This will ensure that any foreign material remains in the pan.
NOTE: Slowly loosen the transmission oil pan bolts, working from the LH front comer to the rear, allowing the transmission fluid pan to gradually drop and the ATF to drain.
Remove the transmission fluid pan and the oil pan to case gasket.
Remove the oil pan bolts.
Remove the transmission fluid pan and oil pan to case gasket. Discard the oil pan to case gasket.
NOTE: If large amounts of material are found, replace the torque converter and check the transmission for cause.
Examine any material found in the transmission fluid pan to determine the condition of the transmission.
Disconnect the solenoid valve electrical connectors.
NOTE: Do not reuse or clean the filter; replace it with a new one.
Remove the oil filter bolts and remove the filter.
Remove the electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid.
Remove the bolt.
Remove the EPC solenoid.
NOTE: Loosen the main control valve body bolts evenly and gradually.
Remove the main control valve body.
Remove the bolts.
Remove the main control valve body.
Remove the manual shaft nut and washer and the manual shaft.
Remove the manual shaft nut and washer.
Pull the manual shaft out.
Remove the manual shaft plate and the lever holder.
Remove the lever holder nut.
Remove the manual shaft plate.
Remove the lever holder.
Remove the detent lever.
Remove the detent lever spring and actuator support.
Remove the detent lever spring.
Remove the actuator support bolt.
Remove the actuator support.
Remove the front pump support and gear and oil pump gasket. Discard the oil pump gasket.
Remove the oil pump bolts.
Remove the front pump support and gear.
Remove the planet gear thrust bearing.
Remove the forward/coast/reverse clutch drum assembly.
Carefully remove the turbine shaft snap ring.
Remove the forward/coast/reverse clutch drum assembly.
Remove the servo retainer.
Remove the servo piston snap ring.
Remove the servo retainer.
NOTE: Use a C-clamp to compress the servo band piston before removing the servo piston clip.
Remove the external spline clutch plate and the internal spline clutch plate.
Inspect the external spline discs for bum marks, scorings, or warpage.
Check for worn or damaged external spline clutch plates and internal spline clutch plates. Measure the facing thickness in three places and calculate the average. The minimum allowable internal spline clutch plate thickness is 1.4 mm (0.055 inch) . The standard thickness is 1.6 mm (0.063 inch) . If the plates are not within the specification, replace the plates.
