NOTE: The removal of all of the accumulator piston retainers, accumulator pistons, and accumulator piston springs from their proper bores in the transmission case is similar. The 1-2 accumulator is given as an example.
Remove the accumulator piston retaining ring while pressing in the accumulator spring retainer.
WARNING: USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING ACCUMULATOR PISTONS FROM THE BORE USING COMPRESSED AIR TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY.
CAUTION: Do not remove the seal rings from the accumulator piston. If necessary, replace them as an assembly for proper transmission operation.
Remove the accumulator piston from the transmission housing by applying compressed air through the appropriate fluid passage. Apply a maximum air pressure of 392 kPa (57 psi) .
Assembly
CAUTION: Do not remove the seal rings from the accumulator piston. If necessary, replace them as an assembly for proper transmission operation.
Clean all components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passages.
Inspect the accumulator piston for damage or wear.
CAUTION: Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator piston to avoid damaging the seal ring.
Install the lubricated accumulator piston into the transmission case bore.
Apply the Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the seal ring. MERCON (R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON (R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
Install the accumulator piston into the proper bore in the transmission case.
Install the new O-ring onto the accumulator spring retainer.
Apply the Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the new O-ring.
Seat the lubricated new O-ring in the groove on the accumulator spring retainer.
CAUTION: Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator spring retainer to avoid damaging the new O-ring.
CAUTION: When installing an accumulator with two accumulator springs, install the accumulator springs in the correct order.
