Use Brake/Clutch/Service Vacuum to remove brake dust and dirt from the brake assemblies.
NOTE: If new rear brake shoes and linings are being installed, resurface the brake drums to remove glazing and to ensure an equal friction surface from side-to-side. Resurfacing will also correct out-of-round and bell conditions.
Use Brake Drum Micrometer to measure the braking surface diameter. If the inside diameter measures more than the maximum specification shown on the outside of the brake drum, replace the brake drum.
Remove the retracting spring.
Remove the (A) brake shoe retracting spring and the (B) anti-rattle spring.
Push, turn, and remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
Remove the rear brake shoes and linings.
If the rear brake shoes and linings are to be reused, inspect and measure the thickness of the linings. If the linings are worn beyond the minimum thickness specification, replace them.
Installation
Clean and lubricate the contact points on the backing plate using Silicone Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-MIC171-A.
NOTE: When installing the rear brake shoes and linings, it is necessary to lubricate the parking brake lever contact points using Silicone Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound D7AZ-19A331-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESE-MlC171-A.
Position the rear brake shoes and linings; install the brake shoe hold-down springs.
Install the (A) brake shoe retracting spring and the (B) anti-rattle spring.
Install the retracting spring.
Measure the inside diameter of the brake drum with Brake Adjustment Gauge.
Position Brake Adjustment Gauge on the rear brake shoes and linings and adjust.
