Assembly
NOTE: Clean the oil pump with a suitable solvent and blow dry with compressed air to dry all parts and clean fluid passages. Inspect all mating surfaces for burrs and scores. Check all the fluid passages for obstructions.
Inspect the spool valve. If not as specified, replace the pump assembly.
Measure the spool valve and check for wear.
Verify the spool valve moves smoothly in the pump housing bore.
Install the spool valve.
NOTE: Do not compress the spool valve spring when measuring with vernier calipers.
NOTE: The spool valve spring has 12 coils.
Measure the spool valve spring. If not as specified, replace the spring.
Install the spool valve spring.
Install a new spool valve washer.
Install the spool valve plug.
Align the marks and install the flange and the inner and outer rotors.
Install the outer rotor.
Install the inner rotor.
Install the flange.
Alignment mark.
Use a flat edge and gap gauge to measure the clearance between the end of the pump housing and the outer rotor and the inner rotor. If not as specified, replace the pump assembly.
Measure the clearance between the oil pump boss and the inner rotor. If not as specified, replace the pump assembly.
Install the pump cover and tighten the pump cover bolts in the sequence shown.
Prime the pump by filling the pump gear cavity with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON. MERCON (R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON (R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
Use the oil pump shaft to verify smooth front pump support and gear operation.
Apply ATF to the new oil distributor sleeve seals and carefully install them on the pump cover.
Apply petroleum jelly to the thrust washer and install it on the pump cover.
