Main Control Valve Body

Disassembly

NOTE: Each valve should slide in and out of its bore under its own weight. When a valve will not slide out under its own weight, depending on the valve, push it out with a wire or place the valve body open-side down and lightly tap it with a soft hammer. Never scratch or damage a valve bore. Do not drop the valves or use a valve that has been damaged. Before assembling the valve body, be certain that all valves are clean and lubricated with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON. MERCON (R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON (R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.

  1. NOTE: Remove the check balls.

Remove the pressure regulator valve.

  1. Remove the roll pin.
  2. Remove the pressure regulator plug.

  1. Remove the (A) stop pin, (B) stop plug, (C) 3-4 shift valve, and the (D) 3-4 shift valve spring.

  1. Remove the (A) spring retainer, (B) solenoid reducing valve spring, and the (C) solenoid reducing valve.

  1. Remove the (A) manual valve.

Assembly

  1. Clean all components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passages. Perform the following before assembling:
    • Inspect the valves for damage or wear.
    • Check for worn or broken springs.

  1. NOTE: Do not compress the spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.

Measure the free length of the pressure regulator spring, 1-2 shift valve spring, low reducing valve spring, the 3-4 shift spring, and the 2-3 timing valve spring. For spring specifications, use the following spring specification chart.

  • If not as specified, replace the spring.

  1. Install the (A) manual valve.

  1. Install the (C) solenoid reducing valve, (B) solenoid reducing valve spring, and the (A) spring retainer.

  1. Install the (D) 3-4 shift valve spring, (C) 3-4 shift valve, (B) stop plug and the (A) stop pin.

  1. Install the (D) low reducing valve spring, (C) low reducing valve, (B) stop plug, and the (A) stop pin.

  1. Install the (D) 1-2 shift valve spring, (C) 1-2 shift valve, (B) stop plug, and the (A) stop pin.

  1. Install the pressure regulator valve.
  1. Install the pressure regulator valve.
  2. Install the pressure regulator valve spring.
  3. Install the pressure regulator spring seat.
  4. Install the pressure regulator sleeve.
  5. Install the pressure regulator plug.
  6. Install the roll pin.
