Valve-Valve Clearance, Adjust

Removal

  1. Remove the valve cover.
  2. Remove the timing belt.

  1. NOTE: Measure each valve's clearance at base circle before removing the camshafts. The shims are not serviceable with the camshafts in place. Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing the camshafts will necessitate repeated removal and installation and wasted labor time.

Use a feeler gauge to measure each valve's clearance and record its location.

  1. Remove the camshafts.

  1. Remove the shims.
  2. NOTE: The shims are marked for thickness; example: 2.22 mm = 222 on shim.

NOTE: The corrected shims allow the following valve clearances.

  • intake valve clearance: 0.11 - 0.18 mm (0.0043 - 0.0071 inch)
  • exhaust valve clearance: 0.27 - 0.34 mm (0.0106 - 0.0134 inch)

NOTE: A midrange clearance is the most desirable:

  • intake: 0.15 mm (0.006 inch)
  • exhaust: 0.3 mm (0.012 inch)

NOTE: Select shims using this formula: shim thickness = measured clearance plus the base shim thickness minus most desirable thickness.

Select shims and mark installation location.

  1. Install new shims.

Installation

  1. Install the camshaft.

  1. Measure new valve clearances.
  2. Adjust the timing of the engine.
  3. Install the timing belt covers.
  4. Install the valve cover.
