IF YOU CONFIRM:

Squeal/Squeak noise from front brakes:

^ While moving forward

^ With very light brake application (pedal pressure)

^ After 10-15 minutes of driving ("hot" brakes)

^ At speeds less than 10 MPH

^ While traveling straight or turning.

NOTE:
This is intended to be a partial list of examples of the types of conditions when you may be able to duplicate front wheel brake squeal/squeak. When attempting to duplicate this noise it is important to have a second person safely standing outside of the vehicle to determine if the noise being heard is coming from the front or rear brakes.

ACTION:

Replace the front brake pads and hardware with the parts listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

NOTE:
DO NOT replace the calipers or caliper assemblies for this incident, if it should occur.

IMPORTANT:
The purpose of ACTION (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire SERVICE PROCEDURE as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing the repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTES:
^ Follow all CAUTIONS in the ESM procedure when removing and replacing brake pads.

^ Use an environmentally appropriate brake cleaner to remove the old grease and/or brake dust from the brake assembly. Consult local environmental regulations to decide which brake cleaner to use.

^ DO NOT GET ANY GREASE ON THE BRAKE PAD "FRICTION" SURFACES.

^ NEVER interchange the greases used in this bulletin. These greases have completely different characteristics and properties. They are only compatible with the specific areas they are intended for.

1. Remove the front brake calipers. Refer to section BR, FRONT DISC BRAKE Removal and Installation in the appropriate Service Manual (ESM) for service information.

2. Apply a thin film of Molykote AS-880N (black) grease to fully coat the caliper fingers (both fingers on Front Left and Front Right calipers).

3. Apply Molykote AS-880N (black) grease between:

^ the outer shim cover and shim

^ the inner multilayered shim and inner pad

4a. Apply a thin film of Molykote 7439 (copper) grease onto the pad retainers in the areas shown in Figure 3.

4b. Apply Molykote 7439 (copper) grease onto the pad ends where they contact the pad retainers.

5. Install pad retainers and pads on torque member.

CAUTION:
^ Securely assemble pad retainers so that they are not being lifted up from torque member.

^ Both inner and outer pads have a pad return system on the pad retainer. Install pad return lever securely to pad wear sensor.

6. Install calipers over assembled pads on the torque member.

CAUTION:
When replacing a pad with a new one, check brake fluid level in the reservoir tank because brake fluid returns to master cylinder reservoir tank when pressing in the piston.

NOTE:
Use a disc brake piston tool (commercial service tool) to easily press in the piston.

7. Install the sliding pin bolt(s), and tighten it to the specified torque.

TORQUE: 26.5 Nm (2.7 kg-m, 20 ft-lb)

8. Burnish the brake pads. Refer to section BR, BRAKE PAD: Brake Burnishing Procedure in the appropriate ESM for service information.
