NOTE :Version 1 fuel pump module assembly fits on earlier model year Altima models. Version 2 fits on later Altima and all Maxima models.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove the fuel pump module assembly (module).

^ Refer to the appropriate section of the Electronic Service Manual (ESM), if needed.

NOTE :Perform repairs in a clean work environment.

2. Determine which version module you are working on (see Version 1 and 2).

3. Remove the 3 wire terminals with red, white, and double-wire black wires from under the top of the module as shown in Figure 1.

NOTE :The white wire may appear yellowish in color.

^ Press the tab in and gently pull the wire off its terminal (see Figure 2)

4. Remove the plastic tie strap that holds the wires to the fuel supply hose (supply hose) as shown in Figure 3.

CAUTION : Be careful not to damage the supply hose or wiring when removing the tie strap.

5. Remove the fuel tank temperature sensor (temp sensor) from its retention feature (see Figure 4).

6. Version 1: Remove the temp sensor wires from the retention feature (see Figure 5).

7. Version 2 only: Remove the temp sensor wires from both retention features (see Figure 6).

8. Version 1 only: Remove all wires from the retention feature on the module (see Figure 7).

NOTE :This retention feature is not reused.

9. Version 1 only: Remove the black plastic retainer (retainer) as shown in Figure 8.

^ Pry on the clip ends using a pocket screwdriver or suitable tool, one side at a time (see Figure 8).

10. Remove the level sensor from the module (see Figure 9).

Push the tab inward, and then push the level sensor up, and then pull it away from the module.

11. Install the new level sensor onto the module (no picture shown).

Perform Step 10 in reverse, making sure its tab locks into place.

12. Version 1 only: Reinstall the retainer by snapping it into place (see Figure 10).

^ Make sure the level sensor's wires are not pinched under the retainer.

13. Install the temp sensor into its retention feature (see Figure 11).

14. Version 1 only: Install the temp sensors wiring into the retention feature as shown in Figure 12.

^ Route the temp sensor's wires to the right of the level sensor.

^ Make sure the wiring is clear of float arm movement.

^ Make sure the wiring is within 0.5 inches (13 mm) from the side of the module.

15. Version 2 only: Secure the level sensors wires into the retention features (see Figure 13).

^ Make sure the wiring is within 0.5 inches (13 mm) from the side of the module.

16. Route the wires on the inside of the supply hose (see Figure 14).

17. Secure the wires to the supply hose with a tie strap as shown in Figure 14.

CAUTION :Be careful not to damage the supply hose or wires when installing the tie strap.

^ Step 17 applies to both module versions.

NOTE :Tie straps are considered a shop supply.

18. Install the wires to the correct terminals (see Figure 15 below).

^ Make sure the wires are routed correctly as shown in Figure 15.

--> Red and white wires are routed in front of the blue wire.
