89 Chevy Cavalier Z24, No Reverse
Q: I have an '89 Chevy Cavalier Z24 with a 2.8L engine. The problem is......I do not have reverse. We have all forward gears. We have searched the net and auto parts stores for details on the valve body, but to no avail. I need some info on removing the valve body and things we should look for. We want to try this first, before removing the transmission from the car. Any information would be greatly appreciated....Brenda

A: First, you should perform a pressure check on the transmission. Virtually every hydraulic circuit in an automatic transmission has a test port. The test ports allows a technician to install pressure gauges to monitor the hydraulic pressure. Compare the readings to those provided by the manufacturer of the transmission. This information allows the technician to target the area of failure in the transmission. Before disassembling the transmission take time to perform a few diagnostic steps. You won't be guessing as much as you disassemble the transmission.

As for information on automatic transmissions. Check with your local technical college, there may be information in their library on you type of transmission. If not, you'll likely have to purchase the information, just like the rest of us in the trade.
