Chevy S-Blazer, ABS Blues
Q: I have a '94 S-Blazer 4 wheel drive with
ABS brakes that I wish it didn't have. I've had 2 minor mishaps because
of them. I've had to make some panic stops when the ABS brakes don't do
anything...I'll be standing on the pedal while no stopping power is being
delivered to the wheels. Can I be helped, or is this something I just
need to deal with. When my bumper was planted in the ass end of a '98
BMW I had a hard time dealing with it.
A:There
has been problems with GM's Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) on vehicles like
yours.. There is a recall starting up on these vehicles and you should
call your nearest dealer for more information.
ALLDATA
Information System shows a recall addressing this problem.
The
Problem: Under certain driving conditions the ABS system can malfunction
causing increased stopping distances during ABS stops while in the two-wheel
drive mode.
If
this occurred at a time when minimum stopping distance was required, a
vehicle crash could occur without prior warning.
The
Fix: The remedy is currently under development. Owner notification is
expected to begin early in 2000. Owners who take their vehicles to an
authorized dealer on an agreed service date and do not receive the free
remedy within a reasonable amount of time should contact Chevrolet at
1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782. Also contact the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration's Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
You do not have to be the original owner of the vehicle to receive recall
repairs at no cost.
