'00 Silverado 4WD Shake
Q:
I own
a 2000 Silverado 2500. When 4WD HI is engaged (in AUTO-4WD, also) the
truck shakes but only when the wheels are turned, in either direction,
around the point of where the steering stops. Do you have an ideas on
what might be causing this?

A:
GM
vehicle's of that type don't have a differential action built into the
transfer case. When 4 wheel drive is activated the front and rear driveshaft
will turn the same speed. When you turn the steering in your vehicle the
front wheels will travel different distances than the rear. Now tie this
in with probably one of the most inflexible positrack rear ends made and
you will get a jerky feeling that becomes more prominent the tighter you
turn the steering. All you have to do is switch to 2 wheel drive and the
problem's gone. That is why one should not operate that type of vehicle
in 4 wheel drive unless conditions call for it. Even the auto 4 wheel
drive feature will have this problem with tight turns. Turn the 4 wheel
off unless you need it.
