'98 Chevy Suburban, Steering Wheel Grab
Q:
My
98 Suburban (4x4..1500) has a serious grab in the steering just off center.
It has no movement in any of the steering components that I can tell,
and drives great otherwise. I have swapped tires with my other truck and
the problem remains. I like to look at the easy things first, but am thinking
gear box..any thoughts? It only has 75K, and is in excellent condition
throughout.

A:
We've
seen this condition in GM vehicles of your type. Our experience has been
that this condition occurs and is most pronounced and often felt in only
one direction. It will almost seem as if you can predict the occurrence
by the position of the steering wheel. If all other steering components
check to be okay, then the steering box is suspect. If it is the steering
box I would suggest a rebuilt or new steering box. The wear problems we've
found could not be corrected with a cleaning and installing new seals
in the steering box.
