Jim Grant's Tech Tips '97 Chevy Silverado, Squeaking Belt
Q:
I have
a '97 Chevy Silverado with 72k and a squeaking belt. The belt squeaks
for about 2 minutes after the engine is started. I have replaced the main
belt, yet it still is squeaking. What is the problem?
A:
The
belt may be making noise but it is the result of another problem. You
should remove the serpentine belt and inspect the pulleys that the belt
is routed over. The culprit we most often find is one of the idler pulleys
or the pulley on the automatic belt tensioner. With the belt removed spin
the pulleys by hand. Feel for any roughness and listen for noise from
the pulley's bearings. The bearing should be quiet and about as smooth
a fluid when spun. If not, replacement is needed.
