Jim Grant's Tech Tips '01 Chevy Venture, Wipers in the Wrong Parking Space Q: My windshield wipers on my 01 Chevy Venture don't lay down on the windshield after they are turned off, they stand straight up on the windshield. They work fine. An estimate from Chevy dealer was over $400 and they would replace the wiper motor and wiper linkage. Is this necessary? Have you seen this before and could this repair be done by my husband and I? - Dawn H. A: If the wipers are parking in the wrong spot each time theyre turned off then I would be inclined to say the park switch in the wiper motor is out of time. If youre a mechanical type person, you could take the wiper motor apart and address the problem or install a replacement wiper motor. It should take about 40 minutes to an hour to replace the motor. As for replacing the wiper linkage, I would need to know why? The most common problem seen is wear/damage due to lack of lubrication. This wear causes the wiper linkage to be too loose and allows the wipers to travel too far. Changing the wiper linkage (which is also called wiper transmission) is a more involved job time wise. If youre not mechanically inclined, I wouldnt suggest this job. But, if you know your way around, have the tools and time, then go for it.
